Introduction

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Cheng-Kung University (NCKU) has been established since 1931, and is the oldest and the most renowned mechanical engineering institutes in Taiwan. Our alumni and alumnus occupy important positions in Taiwan's industries, business, and governmental institution. In addition, numerous faculty members of Taiwan and world's leading universities are also graduated from this department. A local survey reveals that alumni from NCKU have being the most welcome employees by Taiwan business companies. Each year, 170 undergraduate students, 162 master students (including 20 part-time students), and 49 Ph.D. students are enrolled in this department each year. Currently, this department is consisted of 53 full time professors, 10 adjunct professors, 680 undergraduates, 324 master students, and 125 Ph.D. students.

The undergraduate curriculum is designed to provide the students with a solid foundation in engineering science as applied to mechanical engineering, and to prepare graduates for entering graduate school and/or industry. The Graduate School offers advanced courses for qualified students leading to the degrees of the Master of Science and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.

The Department has well-equipped laboratories and mechanical engineering workshops for teaching and research as well as for technical services to industrial organizations.

Program

The teaching and research programs in this department are organized according to both disciplinary and inter-disciplinary themes. We cover all of the core disciplines of mechanical engineering including solid mechanics, thermo-fluid sciences, mechanical design, materials and manufacturing, system control.

The education program emphasizes on the fundamental scientific theories, technical innovation, and practical training. The research program is focused on both fundamental mechanical sciences and engineering and inter-disciplinary topics to satisfy the needs from industries and societies. For the courses offered, besides the fundamental courses that include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, machine design, manufacturing and materials, automatic control, there are other courses related to MEMS, nano-technology, optical and photonic engineering, biomechanics, information and mechatronics, and innovative engineering are offered in a regular base.

Features of the Department

  1. Our department offers both stringent training in fundamental knowledge of mechanical science and board introduction on the state of arts engineering applications. Students graduate from our department are not only active in mechanical related industry, but also play critical roles in other high-tech fields such as semiconductor and optoelectronics.
  2. Our department has excellent faculty members with extraordinary academic reputation and they are all eagerly devoted to education. In together with the state of arts facilities and the innovative teaching styles, students are expected to have the most exceptional educational training leading to their successful career development.
  3. Our department is the oldest department of mechanical engineering in Taiwan and has already played critical contributions to Taiwan's industrial and economic development for the past 70 years and this glorious history will be continued. Our alumni are outstanding and are active involved in Taiwan's industrial, governmental, and academic fields. Most of the alumni hold important positions in each field. Alumni from NCKU have become the favorite choice for business companies in Taiwan.

Academic Research

In order to focus on profundity of research disciplinary and satisfy the need of society and industries, our department is divided into the following six divisions:

  1. Thermal and Fluid Sciences

  4. Manufacturing and Materials
  5. System and Control
  6. Innovative technology in nanotechnology optotoelectronics, energy and biomedical engineering.

Our research topics include: fluid dynamics, heat transfer, combustion, tribology, thermal engineering, two-phase flow, inverse engineering, fracture mechanics, photomechanics, vibrations, wave mechanics, MEMS, nanotechnology, molecular engineering, computational mechanics, design theories, mechanism, creative design, virtual reality, mechanical properties of materials, CAD/CAM, laser processing, photonic engineering, electronics packaging, control theories, biomechanics, servo control, and optomechatronics, etc. The research reports have good reputation and bring significant impacts in the associate academic fields.

Our department leads other mechanical engineering departments in Taiwan in terms of the quantity of the published journal paper every year. In the lastest three years, the faculty members contribute more than 500 papers in the international peer reviewed journals. Many professors have won Excellence Awards from the National Science Council. This department received more than two hundreds and fifty million Taiwan dollars for conducting research across all projects in the lastest three years. The interaction between our department and the associated academic societies is excellent. In addition, the practical demands from the NCKU hospital and the Tainan Science Park also provide excellent opportunities for us to conduct cooperative researches in developing advanced technologies for industrial applications. We hold many important national and international meetings, workshops, and symposiums, and our department is distinguished not only in Taiwan, but also well-recognized around the world.

Career Developement

  1. Pursuing Advanced Studies: Those who graduate from this department may choose to continue their advanced studies in mechanical engineering related disciplines such as mechanical, aerospace, applied mechanics, materials, and civil and environment engineering or other engineering disciplines such as electrical, optoelectronics, and computer engineering. Students who are interested in management can also pursue their study in business administration. The study in the department provides sufficient training and necessary fundamental knowledge for these advanced studies.
  2. Working in industries: Those who graduate from our department are popular in industry. Almost all kinds of industries require mechanical engineers. Our students are well respected in industry and quickly gain employment across a broad spectrum of engineering specialties. A board survey conducted by Cheers Magazine reveals that alumni from NCKU have being the most welcome employees by Taiwan business companies.
